Always photograph red!
That's one of the fundamantal tenets taught by american photographer Tony Sweet, and one I heartily agree with.
Red is probably the strongest, most attention grabbing colour there is, so it's featuring in an image will always add an element of spice to the composition, much like adding some chillies to a dish will help in bringing out the other flavours.
But it's easy to overdo it and make the red object in your image overwhelm all the other elements that you might be trying to draw attention to.
However, for this image subtlety in the use of the colour red is not the issue, with the vibrant red/orange of the lifebelt at Llanddona beach on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey being the main subject of the composition, and all the other elements just providing some background contrast.
My wife Liz and I were enjoying the spring sunshine on the North Wales coast at the time, strolling along the lovely beach at Llanddona, me with my camera around my neck just looking for interesting scenery to photograph as we went along.
The regularly placed red lifebelts certainly perked up the views!
