The story behind this image

One of the earliest Magnox nuclear power stations built in the UK, this is Wylfa on the north coast of Anglesey, just off the North Wales coast.

I got up very early one morning in August 2008 to be on location at the foreshore of Cemlyn Bay nature reserve about an hour before sunrise, to catch the beautiful dawn light over the still waters of the Irish Sea, with the squat buildings and reactor hall of Wylfa lit up against the horizon.

A nature reserve and a nuclear powerplant make for curious neighbours, but in photographic terms the images I shot that morning would not have been as interesting or impactful without that dystopian structure brooding in the background.
