I've discovered, over the years of travelling, that one of the best pre-holiday purchases you can make is a detailed map of the region that you're going to visit.
So although my wife Liz and I had been to Tenerife in the Canary Islands several times in the past, I knew there would still be unexplored corners of the island for us to discover.
Hence the map, which gave us a great deal of detail and information about the north coast, an area we had only briefly touched on during past trips, but we were keen to see in more detail.
So with the help of our map we set off to spend some time in the lesser known and less developed north.
In the end we made a few day trips to the coastal towns and villages, but one place, Punta del Hidlago, so impressed us that we came back twice.
Billed as one of the best sunset views on Tenerife, I, of course, had an ulterior motive to visit, with the intention of filming videos and time lapse sequences of the sun sinking in to the atlantic ocean, with the mountainous, volcanic scenery and the lights of the coastal towns adding an extra layer of visual delight to the experience.
And I wasn't disappointed, with a glorious lightshow to enjoy while listening to the waves breaking on the jagged rocks just a couple of metres away as day faded into night.
And then we had the added bonus of a nighttime drive back south, through the starlit beauty of the high altitude Teide National park.
