Not shown in the tourist brochures featuring Taurito on the south coast of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, this abandoned half-built hotel perched halfway up the opposite cliff face from where we were staying, is a poignant symbol of the dire straits that the Spanish economy got into following the crash of 2008.
This is not your typical holiday scene, but I was rather pleased that it was there for me to look at and photograph as a refreshing change from sunny skies and beaches.
I've always been drawn to dereliction and decay as a photographic subject, but when I saw a band of light from the newly risen sun to the east start tracking down the cliff face above the ruins I just had to shoot this impromptu timelapse from the balcony of our apartment.
A somewhat unusual holiday scene, with a hint of pathos and unrealised dreams.
