The Easter weekend of 2015 produced some quite wonderful weather conditions over North Wales, with arguably the most spectacular being this bank of fog, trapped under an inversion layer in the Vale of Clywd and stretching all the way back to the coast.
Originally Liz and I planned on watching the sunset on the Sunday evening from the beach at Talacre, but as we descended down towards the coast we entered into this fogbank and, realising the futility of continuing, headed back inland.
Realising something special was happening, we headed up to the Pen Barras car park on the slopes of our local hill, Moel Famau, which gives a lovely view over the Vale of Clwyd towards the sunset over the mountains of Snowdonia on the western horizon.
The view was amazing, with a billowing sheet of fog stretching all the way from the slopes of the Clywdian hills over to Snowdonia.
This was too good an opportunity to miss, so I climbed up Offa's Dyke as fast as I could till I was halfway up the side of Foel Ffenli and rapidly set up camera, tripod and all the other paraphenalia needed to shoot a time lapse sequence.
Just in time, as the sun was, by now, starting to sink into the haze with golden light spilling over the undulating fog, highlighting the peaks while leaving the troughs in shadow - just great.
A little later still and the sun set, turning the sky at the horizon vivid orange while the fog itself turned blue, reflecting the colour of the sky and providing a stunning colour contrast.
I stayed put, still shooting stills, for about forty minutes after sunset, allowing the scene to slowly fade to black, before packing up and heading back down the hill to the car and then home, still buzzing from having witnessed such a spectacle.
