With the morning booked off work and a foggy weather forecast to hand, the obvious place to go for a sunrise was the summit of my local hill, Moel Famau.
While not the highest peak in the world, at 1818 feet, it was more than high enough to get me above the blanket of fog that rippled and eddied over the Cheshire Plain laid out before me to the east.
Arriving at the summit well before sunrise, I was treated first of all to a display of beautiful dawn colours.
The sky was lit orange on the horizon, while the fog below took on the blue tinge of the still indigo overhead sky.
The sunrise followed a few minutes later, and with a clear horizon to the east I was able to watch as the golden orb of the sun crested the sea of fog and started to light the tops of the fog ripples as it rose higher and higher in the sky.
Finally I turned my attention to the north, where the foothills of the Clywidian range of mountains provided the rises and gullies in which the swirling fog could play hide and seek with the land below, sometimes covering, sometimes revealing in a delicate dance.
All in all, a great morning to be up and about. A tad nippy, but what do you expect on top of a mountain at dawn in Wales in winter?
