One of the pluses of being jetlagged is that you're wide awake in the middle of the night, a condition I used to my advantage at the beginning of the holiday my wife Liz and I enjoyed in Colorado, USA.
Staying in Estes Park, just a short drive from the beauties of the Rocky Mountain National Park, gave me easy access to serene scenery like this, overlooking the still waters of Sprague Lake in the cold pre-dawn light.
It was a wonderful experience to spend a couple of hours here, just watching and listening as the sky to the east slowly lightened with the approaching sunrise until, like a crescendo of light, the sun finally appeared over the lake.
By this time I was getting tired and hungry, so I'm glad it was only a short drive back to our hotel for some breakfast and a doze in the fresh, high altitude air.
