Just to the south of Estes Park, and right next to the Rocky Mountains, lies the small but perfectly formed Lily Lake, just inside the Rocky Mountain National Park.
During our two week stay in Estes Park, my wife Liz and I made three trips up to Lily Lake, just to stroll around the lakeside path and admire the scenery.
Although the surrounding mountains aren't as dramatic as found around lakes deep inside the park, the more gentle, rounded granite hills surrounding the lake are extremely pleasant to look at, and provide a great 'V' shaped frame for the waters of the lake that make for a great photographic composition, especially when the surface of the lake is calm and reflective.
Liz and I decided to spend an evening at Lily Lake, to see if a nice sunset would develop.
We arrived just after the sun had disappeared behind the peaks of the Rockies to the west, leaving the sky brightly lit against the sillhoutted hills around Lily Lake.
I started shooting the stills for this time lapse video, more in hope than anything else, thinking that there wouldn't be much to see as the sun continued to set, but how wrong I was, as the high clouds over the lake caught the last of the sun's rays and put on a fantastic display of colours before the light finally faded from the scene.
I'm really glad we made the effort to visit Lily Lake on that particular evening, and that we stayed and filmed as such beauty was unveiled before us.
