Allegedly the most photographed tree in North Wales, this famous 'Lone Tree' even has its own web page.
And why not, with its unique location just off the banks of Llyn Padarn at Llanberis, with the ruins of Dolbadarn castle and the high peaks of the mountains around Snowdon in the background, the whole view is one of compositional perfection.
But not many people see the view like this, at 5am on a cold winter's morning in December, with heavy rain clouds blowing overhead, glowing in the artificial lights of Llanberis.
With a day off work to spend as I liked, I decided to go places and see things that required a touch more dedication than my usual weekend excursions, hence my nightime foray to the shores of Llyn Padarn.
I had hoped to film a time lapse of stars wheeling over the lake and tree, but the weather put paid to that notion, so instead I concentrated on the clouds, glowing an unearthly yellow as they tracked across the scenery.
Eventually the cool blue light of dawn crept across the sky, and it was fascinating to watch as the yellow artificial lighting was slowly overcome by the natural light of day.
So, not exactly how I'd hoped the trip to Snowdonia to turn out, but still a very satisfying way to spend two and a half hours!
