One of the highlights of the fortnight that my wife Liz and I spent on the island of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean Sea was being able to watch and film the amazing sunsets that are a feature of this part of the world.
With clear, dry skies the quality of light was just beautiful, with a crisp sunset all the way down to the horizon followed by a stunning display of twilight colours, ranging from golden, through orange, to ochre and finally magenta and deep blue as the earth rotated on into night.
We found some great places to experience these sunsets from, and one of the best was from a viewpoint by the side of the road between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia, overlooking the lovely Mirabello Bay, with the town of Agios Nikolaos on the far side.
This gave us a view of the mountains in central Crete on the horizon, with bands of water in the foreground which reflected the astonishing colours of the twilight sky.
As darkness began to fall in earnest the lights of Agios Nikolaos, together with smaller towns and villages dotted around the coast, came on and grew stronger as natural light fled the scene.
Just a mesmerising series of beautiful light changes in a wonderful location, and something I was really glad I was able to photograph to remember this place by.
