The end of a lovely midsummer Saturday spent hiking around Trefiw in Snowdonia, North Wales, found my wife Liz and I heading home along the coast in the late evening.
To the northwest there looked to be a rather interesting sunset developing, so we decided to stop and see if we could catch the action.
Our chosen spot was the bridge over the tidal estuary of the river Conwy, just opposite the imposing bulk of Conway castle, from where we could watch the sun setting right into the mouth of the estuary.
The sunset and twilight turned out to be spectacular, with bands of light clouds catching the warm light of the sun as it approached, and dipped below, the horizon.
But it wasn't just overhead that was an amazing spectacle, with the calm waters of the estuary reflecting the beautiful colours in the clouds, doubling the visual pleasure.
And to cap it all, towards the end of our time there, the ebbing tide swept out up the length of the Conwy estuary, revealing the shining mudflats that our wading birds are so fond of.
Wow! I'm certainly glad we decided to interrupt our journey home to watch such beauty unfolding before our eyes (and my camera lens).
