When I'm visiting a town for the first time I like to go down the back streets, away from the shops and the well looked after tourist strip, and see what the not so glamourous shops and houses look like.
I find I get a much better feel for a place that way, sometimes in stark contrast to what the travel companies and tourist offices would have you believe by looking at thier brochures.
This window display was photographed in Schladming, Austria, as Liz and I were exploring the town during our holiday there last summer. We were well away from the churches and shops that made up the centre of town, and we were pleasantly suprised at how nice and well kept the less frequented parts were.
This window display is a typical example of the little touches we found. Although the building was old and a little careworn, the owners still took the time to put some colourful flowers on display.
This is typical of the attitude we found in Austria, especailly in the rural areas - very nice.
