From a distance the abandoned slate quarries of Dinorwig, just above the town of Llanberis in Snowdonia, look like a grey wasteland. You could almost be looking at the set for a post apocalytical movie. But get up close and explore and you'll find that these old workings are a photographic wonderland of impossibly deep pits, decaying buildings and rusting abandoned old machinery.
OK, so it's not pristine wilderness, but the atmosphere and weight of history has to be experienced first hand to be believed.
I spent the day doing just that with my explorer friend Dom, who know these workings intimately having climbed and abseiled here quite regularly.
There were many and varied photo opportunities for me to enjoy, and this is one of my favourite images from that day, combining the decay of the old slate workings with just a glimpse of beauty seen through the window.
I was originally going to process this image as a black and white, but after playing around in Photoshop for a while I decided on this severely desaturated version instead, carrying over just a hint of the colours of rust and decay that define this place.
