This is the famous St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) in Venice, Italy.
I knew that when the tide is at its highest at the Spring and Autumn equinoxes that Venice flooded, but I'd never witnessed this for myself before our trip there last March.
It was fascinating watching the water fountaining up from the grids and slowly spreading across the marble floored square.
So much so that I didn't notice the water creeping up over my boots while I was busy taking various photos of this phenonemon until it was too late!
Oh well, it was worth getting wet feet to see such a sight, and to be able to take photos of the beautifully lit pallisades reflecting in the still waters covering the square.
I came back the following morning at low tide to find the waters all gone and the square returned to normal, as if the floods and reflections had just been a dream.
