The best way to get any appreciable distance around Venice is by water. Obvious really, but from a photographic point of view you also get some unique views from the water that you can't get on land.
The only problem being the constant bobbing up and down - you can forget tripods and long exposures.
I took this photo of the church of Saint Mary of the Rosary, together with its vaporetto (water bus) stop, while sailing down the Giudecca Canal en route from the berth of our cruise liner to St Mark's Square.
The sun was bright and high in the sky, which gave me a decent shutter speed but controlling the contrast was a challenge. There's no chance of doing a three shot sequence for HDR processing from a moving boat!
In the end I used the shadow/highlight adjustment feature in PhotoShop to tame the contrast and reveal detail in the shadowed areas of the image.
