Climbing up the path to the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall in Dumfires and Galloway in the Scottish Borders is a lung busting exercise, so I had the perfect excuse to take a breather halfway up and take in the view back down the valley.
I'm glad my wife Liz and I stopped, otherwise I would have missed this magnificent light show as storm clouds raced overhead and errant rays of sun spotlit the valley sides for brief instants in time.
I'm also glad I decided to heave my camera gear up the hill as well, and although photographing the waterfall proved a washout (literally) on this occasion, this view down the valley more than made up for it.
The contrast range was beyond the capabilities of my trusty Canon 5D however, so this image is actually made up from three different exposures, all taken within a few seconds of each other and manually blended together in PhotoShop.
