Liz and I were driving through the Gwydyr Forest in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, when I came across this fascinating composition.
Of course, on one level it's a pretty picture of a lane with autumn colours, but what made me stop the car in the middle of the road, jump out and take this photo was the wonderful interplay of the geometries in the scene.
There were the two tyre tracks leading the eye through the scene which form the main compositional element, but overlayed on the road in a horizontal pattern were the alternating bands of light and dark caused by the tree shadows.
Adding a vertical element were the trees in the middle distance, and combining all these straight line features gives a pervading sense of depth to the image.
I only managed to get this one shot before I had to jump back in the car and drive off, as someone was coming up behind me on the single track road, but it was well worth the effort.
