Solitary trees make such a statement in a landscape photo that I'll always photograph them when I find one.
I spotted this particular example from about half a mile away, while my wife Liz and I were hiking a trail in the Snowdonia National Park that started at Capel Curig and followed the path of the Afon Llugwy through to Llyn Ogwen.
Fortunately the light held till we got there, so while Liz sorted out a picnic I framed up several shots of the bent and battered tree with the Carneddau mountain range in the background.
Sunlight and shadow were playing over the scene and on reviewing the images later this one, with sunlight on the tree itself, stood out as the best.
I experimented with a black and white conversion, but in the end the original colour version won out with a bit of tweaking to enhance the mood.
Maybe I'll go back and re-photograph this tree in bad weather, when a high contrast monochrome version should work well.
