My wife Liz and I were climbing Snowdon in North Wales, following the Watkin Path up alongside the waterfalls and stream in early Spring, just as the first signs of new life were appearing on the trees on the far side of the river.
I love early spring, with all the promise of new life and longer days after the cold dark winter, but trying to capture this mood in a photo is far from easy.
For me, this picture of the still skeletal trees, just in their first stages of budding and leafing, combines the sombre atmosphere of a winter's day with the fresh hope of the coming spring.
Finding a meaningful composition in the jumble of trunks, branches and leaves was quite a challenge, and although this arrangement is a little messy the strong diagonal of the main branch gives the necessary structure and direction to the image. Anyway, nature is naturally messy!
