At an altitude of 1,400 metres, the small town of Vilaflor is the highest settlement on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, nestled on the flanks of the Mount Teide volcano.
During the week long winter break my wife Liz and I enjoyed on Tenerife in January 2020 we drove past Vilaflor on a couple of occasions on our way upwards to the Teide National Park, taking the winding mountain roads from our resort on the island's heavily developed south coast.
Driving northwards from the edge of the Atlantic ocean the scenery soon changes from the flat coastal plain into the mountainous volcanic uplands around Vilaflor, and although we didn't stop at Vilaflor this time, we certainly took advantage of the stunning scenery arround the town to pause and take numerous photographs of the rock formations and wonderful forests of cloud pines through which we passed on our way upwards to the National Park.
This panoramic collage provides a sweeping overview of the dramatic volcanic landscape, dotted with those hardy cloud pines.
