The dramatic volcanic landscapes that make up the interior of Tenerife in the Canary Islands are what my wife Liz and I really enjoyed exploring, driving the twisting mountainous roads in our little hire car during our week long winter warmth break in Janaury 2020.
One of our excursions took us northwards from our resort on the south coast of the island, up through the village of Vilaflor (at 1,400 metres altitude, Vilaflor is the highest setllement on Tenerife), and on to the Teide National Park in the centre of Tenerife.
Just beyond Vilaflor we entered into a region of stark volcanic upwellings, forming plugs of igneous rock emerging from softer, eroded rocks below and dotted with cloud pines, trees specially adapted to survive in arid conditions by capturing moisture from passing clouds.
A convenient layby allowed me to stop and capture this image featuring the cloud pines and one of those dramatic volcanic plugs, using the road as a lead line to draw the eye through the composition towards the volcanic plug in the distance.
Well worth a quick but careful dash into the middle of the road to get the photo.
