Sunset approaches and the shadows are lengthening in the Teide National Park on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, revealing the eruption scarred flanks of the Mount Teide volcano at the centre of the island.
My wife Liz and I have driven up to the park, at 6,500 feet above sea level, in order to watch the stars come out in the dark skies and clean air for which the uplands of Tenerife are rightly famous.
But before nightfall there's still time for us to enjoy a hike through the Sendero Roques de Garcia, photographing the beautiful and dramatic scenery in the low angled sunset light as we go, before returning to the viewpoint 'La Ruleta' for the night time star show.
