The sun had long since set into the murk on the western horizon as Liz and I made our way back along the beach at Church Bay on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, just off the North Wales coast.
Stumbling along the water's edge as gentle waves lapped over the stones that make up most of this stretch of coast, I started seeing mini scenes at my feet, made up of shapes, colours and patterns, that I hadn't appreciated when my vision was firmly fixed on the 'grand' view of sea and sky.
So out came all the paraphenalia of long exposure photography, tripod, camera, filters, remote release and I spent a few extra minutes just photographing what was going on at my feet.
With so little light left, exposure times were a long 30 seconds, which I used to my advantage to blur the waves that were lapping around the stones in my composition, creating that lovely ghosting effect and providing a certain contrast between the fixed stones and moving water.
Liz was waiting patiently by the car (she does a lot of that!) for me to finally finish and then drive the hour and a quarter back home in, what was by then, complete darkness.
