Early January 2017 and a light dusting of winter snow lies on the high peaks of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.
Unusually for the time of year, a ridge of high pressure is lying over Wales, giving rise to bright, crisp sunny days and cold, windless nights.
So my wife Liz and I were very keen to use the last day of the Christmas break to get out and about and see some of the beauty we knew would await us in the mountains of our beloved North Wales.
Driving through Betws-y-Coed and on towards Capel Curig we were entranced by one lovely view after another, with the low angled winter sun picking out details in the trees and rocks as we drove by.
After lunch at the Siabod Cafe, and a good look round the Soul of Snowdonia Gallery, it was on to one of the most popular views in the park.
This is the vista out over the waters of Llyn Mymbyr, just past the Plas y Brenin mountain sports centre, taking in the high peaks of the Snowdon Horseshoe in the background.
Photographed in mid afternoon, with the sun already sinking to the southwest, the light was just gorgeous, painting the bracken coated hills in the foreground with a golden glow while just grazing the snow capped peaks beyond.
The easy way to photograph this scene would have been with a single exposure, cropped later to give this panoramic format.
But I had in mind a potential large, highly detailed print at some point in the future, so instead of capturing just a single exposure I took a series of overlapping frames, combining them using the 'Merge to Panorama' function in Adobe Lightroom before finishing off in Photoshop.
The resulting very high resolution file looks amazing, and although I haven't yet had the nerve to print it I'm looking forward to seeing it printed out in all its glory.
