Ships are wonderful playgrounds for the photographer.
Everywhere you look there are interesting angles, shapes, colours and tones that you can make something of if you've a mind to.
This abstract view shows the structure of the sliding roof that covered one of the swimming pools on the P&O liner Arcadia, and I became more and more aware of the photographic potential while Liz and I were lying by the pool reading books.
In the end I had to abandon the book, go back to our cabin and fetch the camera.
I then spent a few very comfortable minutes lying on the sun lounger looking up and photographing the roof, taking in various angles and compositions.
A few weeks later I reviewed the shots and chose this one as my favourite.
I like the simple blue and neutral colour palette, which compliments the stark geometries of the roof structure, and I also preferred this image because of the diagonal arrangement of the roof struts across the frame, adding a dynamism to the overall effect that wasn't so strong in the other exposures I'd made.
It's not often I get to photograph from a sun lounger! - I'll have to try it more often.
