One good thing about going on a cruise (there are others!) is that you get close access to your ship while boarding.
This means you can take photos like this, using a wide angled lens to emphassie the shape and size of the vessel, and using mooring ropes as leading lines to draw the eye into the scene.
This is the P&O liner Arcadia, berthed at Kotor, Montenegro.
The ship is so large compared to the dock that only half its length fitted on, which made for some fancy manoeuvering by the captain to get us in and out.
I took photos similar to this one at almost every port we stopped at, but this is one of my favourites due to the simple uncluttered dock and the red buffers on the mooring ropes contrasting sharply with the aquamarine sea.
Just as in cooking where a little bit of chilli is enough to season a dish, in photography a little bit of red is enough to bring a photo to life.
Just try covering the red rope protectors and see what I mean.
