Looking north from the patio of our hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, gave us a great view out over the town to the aptly named 'Lumpy Ridge' range of hills, just to the east of the Rocky Mountains proper.
The most striking rock formation, pictured here, is known locally as the Twin Owls, becasue that's what the rocks look like, two owls huddling together.
The Twin Owls looked at their best either just after sunrise or just before sunset, with the low angled, warm light grazing the contours of the rocks, picking out details and textures that weren't visible with the sun higher in the sky.
This image is a sunset view, when the light is slightly warmer than at sunrise due to increased moisture and particulate content of the air later in the day.
