There are so many lakes in the Rocky Mountain National Park that there was no way my wife Liz and I could get to hike to them all during our two week stay in Estes Park, Colorado.
For one thing, we didn't have enough time, and for another thing, we didn't have enough breath to get us to some of the more extreme locations.
One lake that we did manage to hike to, however, was Mills Lake, about halfway up the Glacier Gorge trail at just under 10,000 feet altitude.
The day we visited was overcast, which was a blessing as the sun can be really strong this high up and you can overheat easily.
Even so, we were well in need of a break when we finally reached our destination, so we spent a relaxing hour having a picnic and taking a few photos.
The glacial lake water was wondefully clear, so I used my polarising filter to take this photo, with as much detail beneath the surface as above.
It was a lot easier hiking back down afterwards!
