The story behind this image

During our late September holiday, spent exploring Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park, my wife Liz and I drove though a lot of beautiful scenery.

Most of our drives took us either along the Bear Lake Road or up to the Alpine Visitor Centre high on the Trail Ridge Road.

But once of twice we took the long way round and headed a little north from Estes Park, where we were staying, up the Fall River Road.

While driving along the Fall River Road we noticed a large number of cars and trucks parked up on the verge, a normal occurence in elk rutting season when folk will stop anywhere at any time to watch the elk antics.

But as we drew closer we saw what all the excitement was about, miles and miles of golden aspens, interspersed with dark hued evergreen fir trees, stretching all the way to the peaks of the Mummy Mountain Range in the far distance.

This is part of the Roosevelt National Forest, a pristine wilderness and absolutely stunning in its autumn finery.

So, of course, we joined the hordes 'oohing' and 'aahing' and photographing madly by the side of the road for a good half hour before we'd exhausted our capacity to take in the views!
