Spending a day exploring the sights, sounds and smells of Funchal, the capital city and main port of Madeira, was a treat for all the senses.

One of the highlights of our brief time on this island, stuck out on its own in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, was a visit to the main market.

There was pretty much everything for sale there, and this wonderfully colourful display of locally produced fruit and veg was certainly eye-popping.

Can you spot the sugarcane, ready for chewing, in the middle?
