Poppy #4

Close up photo of open red poppy flower

The story behind this image

The poppy is a wonderfully photogenic flower but a real pain to actually photograph in the natural environment as those large floppy petals dance around like crazy in even the lightest of breezes.

Having some prime examples in your back garden is a help, as you can wait for a still, cloudy day before nipping out with your macro set up to take a sharp image in sympathetic light.

These large red poppies of mine are particularly dramatic, especially when set against a background of green foliage, but on this occasion I decided to get in really close with some macro tubes and focus on the intricate details of the poppy head itself.

Just a day later and this lovely example was past its prime and shedding leaves.
