Wandering around the harbour at Kirkwall, the capital town of the Orkney Islands, in the short time remaining to us before having to board our cruise liner and sailing away, Liz and I came across this lovely old fashioned yacht.
Its wooden decking and mast were glowing in the afternoon sun, and set against the deep aquamarine waters in the harbour it looked absolutely fantastic.
So of course, I wanted to take a photo of it in all its splendour, but unfortunately the scene was cluttered by the usual flotsam and jetsam found in any working harbour.
So in the end I framed this shot to just include the front end of the yacht, excluding all the clutter and distilling the main thrust of the composition to the shapes, lines and colours of the wooden decking and mast, contrasted with the ocean behind.
For this image, less was definitely more.
