This image is all about the conflict between dark and light.
The weather was turning stormy in the North Sea as we sailed out of Kirkwall, the capital town of the Orkney Islands, off the north coast of Scotland.
Standing on the upper deck of the P&O liner Azura gave me a dramatic view of the unfolding coastline, punctuated by a solitary wind turbine set against the roiling clouds and rain squalls that had arrived over the past hour as an Atlantic frontal system moved in.
Suddenly a vivid shaft of sunlight pierced the wrack, spotlighting the white wind turbine in its lonely vigil on the bleak headland.
One click of the shutter and a few seconds later the shaft of sunlight had disappeared and the magical moment had passed, never to be repeated exept in this evocative image.
Right place, right time, and with a camera in my hand ready to go.
