During our cruise to Iceland and back on board the P&O liner Azura, my wife Liz and I also had the opportunity to explore the Scottish Islands of the Hebrides, Shetland and Orkney.
The Orkney islands were our last stop, and during our day there we took a tour out to see some of the outstanding scenery and ancient monuments that abound in this part of the world.
Older than Stonehenge, the Ring of Brodgar is a must see on any visit to the Orkney Islands, and we got to see and walk around it on a glorious sunny day - quite rare in this part of the world, or so I'm told!
To capture this image I positioned myself carefully relative to the position of the stone and sun, in order to include the stone's shadow in the composition, and to have the stone backlit, with just the rim catching the direct light of the sun.
Then it was just a question of waiting until the view was clear of other visitors for a couple of seconds while I pressed the shutter release.
