As soon as Liz and I drove into the car park adjacent to Newgale Beach on the coast of the Pembrokeshire National Park my eye was drawn to this weathered old wooden boardwalk, leading up a large hill of shingle seemingly to the sky.
I just love scenes like this, rich in character and metaphor, and even as I got out of the car and started to unpack my camera, I knew I had something special to photograph here.
With a simple, stark composition based around lines, triangles and a vanishing point, I didn't want anything to distract from the meaning of the image.
So I deliberately excluded most of the sky, pretty though it was with fluffy cumulus clouds, and a conversion to monochrome with a contrast and detail boost completed the effect I had pre-visualised even before getting out of the car.
