A beautiful spring day in mid May and for once the sun is shining over the mountains and valleys of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.
One of the most stunning views of offer in Snowdonia is to be found driving along the A5 from Bethesda to Capel Curig up the side of the Nant Ffrancon valley, with lush pasture on the valley floor quickly giving way to dramatic peaks either side.
Normally the weather conditions here are pretty dire, so I couldn't let such a view on such a lovely day go un-photographed.
A convenient layby allowed me to stop safely on the narrow road, as I needed extra time to set up my camera on its tripod.
Normally I would have photographed a brightly lit scene like this handheld, but in this view the contrast range was well outside my camera's ability to capture all the tones in a single shot, so instead I took five seperate exposures, each one stop apart to be blended into a high dynamic range (HDR) image later on in Adobe Lightroom.
Hence the use of the tripod, to ensure each of the five shots were exactly aligned with each other to make the blend work.
A lot of effort?
Certainly, but a view like this on a day like this is surely worth it.
