The vast bulk of Crib Goch looms above me as I stand on the shores of Llyn Llydaw in the Snowdonia National Park at sunrise on the shortest day of the year.
With infinite slowness the rising sun first kisses the peaks of the ridge with golden light, before flowing down the flanks of this ancient monolith until all is lit with fire and ice.
The lake and rocks at my feet remain in shadow for a little while longer, while the glowing mountain reflects in the bands of water ruffled by the zephyr of a passing breeze.
Overhead the mournful croak of a rook pierces the silence and then all is quiet again.
This is a time for prayer, for contemplation and for a fresh realisation of one's place in God's created order.
