This menacing lump of rock is Crib Goch, which forms part of the Snowdon Horseshoe, an outstanding ridge climb in Snowdonia, North Wales.
This ridge, with one thousand foot drops and precarious footing, has claimed many lives over the years, and continues to do so as the foolhardy or unprepared risk its deceptive charms.
The morning of this shot I'm safely at the bottom, on the shores of Llyn Llydaw, watching and photographing as an amazing lightshow unfolds before me. To the east a small gap in the clouds has opened, allowing a brief ray of golden light to splash across the lower slopes of the Crib.
Above, the storm clouds gather, adding a suitable air of brooding menace to this otherworldly scene.
Thirty seconds later and the gap in the clouds to the east closes, the light reverts to flat and grey, and the magic comes to end, but what a priviledge to have been there and witnessed such beauty! Well worth getting up early for!
