This still image of the milky way arching over the watchtower at the tip of Llanddwyn Island on Anglesey is one of 2168 images that I took during the course of the night of August 11th-12th 2015 to make my Dusk to Dawn Time Lapse #2 video.
It was an amazing night by the sea, with clear skies and the Perseid meteor shower in full swing overhead.
Looking to the south to capture the movement of the milky way across the sky, I used the great low light capability of my Canon 6D DSLR, with the ISO cranked up to a crazy 6400 (try that with film!) to capture the faint star and gas details that I couldn't see with the naked eye.
I selected this particular frame for further enhancement in Lightroom and presentation as a still image because of the position of the milky way relative to the Llanddwyn watchtower and because there was still just a hint of twilight in the sky at that time, giving a lovely gradation of colour from the yellow lights on the horizon to the deep blue of space overhead.
Now I'm going to have to find more beautiful dark sky locations to photograph the milky way against.
It's a good job I live in North Wales, where beauty is always only a short drive away. Mind you, finding a cloudless night sky is a different challenge in this part of the world!
