The 'beast from the east' weather system that afflicted the UK in early spring 2018 resulted in some dramatic winter-like scenes, especially in the mountains of Snowdonia near my home in North Wales.
So as soon as the roads were passable my wife Liz and I headed off to see the sights, under leaden grey skies still threatening more snow.
The dramatic winter landscape of Snowdonia exceeded our expectations, with frozen lakes surrounded by the brooding menace of snow capped peaks, battered by the deep chill of a freezing easterly wind.
Needless to say we didn't venture out of the car much, but there was no way I was going to miss photographing this scene of a frozen Llyn Ogwen, with the mountain Pen yr Ole Wen dominating the skyline on the far shore and the snow capped Glyderau to the south. (To the left in this image).
I wanted to emphasise the swirls and patterns in the ice on the surface of the lake so I took the frames for this panoramic collage using a wide angled lens to increase the impact of the foreground down on the lake shoreline.
A beautiful and dramatic view, but I was glad to get back inside the car after just a few minutes' exposure!
