Nestled in the limestone hills of North Wales, Llangollen is a lovely old market town and tourist trap.
Among its attractions are the river Dee, the Llangollen railway and the Llangollen canal, each of which has its own unique feel.
This image shows a view of the canal at the old wharf, just above the train station.
I'd never seen this part of Llangollen before, and I was delighted by the quiet, olde worlde charm of the buildings and tow path, especially with the late evening sun filtering through the trees on the far bank of the canal.
When it came to take a photo, however, that low angled sun posed a problem in that the contrast levels across the scene were through the roof.
In the end I had to take seven seperate exposures, each one stop apart, to capture the full tonal range present in the composition.
A run through Photomatix Pro in exposure fusion mode got me a final composite file in which most of the detail across the frame was at least visible, and a few more tweaks in PhotoShop resulted in this final picture.
