Llandudno, Little Orme #3

Sunlight on the Little Orme, Llandudno, North Wales coast

The story behind this image

One of my wife Liz's and my favourite walks is the stroll along the North Shore promenade at Llandudno on the North Wales coast.

Bounded at both ends by limestone headlands, the Great Orme to the west and the Little Orme, pictured here, to the east, there's a great view to be enjoyed whichever direction you decide to walk in.

The weather can make things even more interesting, with sudden squalls blowing in off the Irish Sea sending the promenaders scurrying for cover.

The weather conditions were certainly mixed on the occasion of this photo, with dark storm clouds streaming by overhead punctuated by shafts of brilliant light as the sun found the odd gap in the wrack.

The sort of conditions that an outdoor photographer such as me really gets excited about.

So I diverted off the promenade at the Little Orme end of the shore and set up my camera next to the breakers, waiting for a shaft of light to hit the rock.

a few minutes later my efforts were rewarded as the honey coloured limestone lit up like a lightbulb against the dark skies behind.

There was even some gentle light on the foreground stones and breaking wave to add to the light/dark effect.

Back home I converted the RAW file to monochrome, as this scene is all about shades and tones, and removing the colour from the composition serves to focus attention on this aspect of the final image.
