The mountains, lakes and forests of Snowdonia, North Wales, have long been the places of myth and legend, and none more powerful than the tales of king Arthur and his knights of the round table.
So it's only fitting than one of the most instantly recognisable artifacts of the legend of King Arthur, the 'sword in the stone' Excalibur, has a dramatic sculpture in its honour by the shores of Llyn Padarn in the town of Llanberis.
Having spent the afternoon and evening touring the beauties of the Snowdonia National Park, my wife Liz and I were heading through Llanberis on our way home when we stopped to check out the recently installed and very large sword.
Of course I had to photograph it, and chose to do so from the side opposite its spotlit face, allowing the direct light to catch just the edges of the blade and grip.
Set against the blue of the twilight sky, the yellow artifical lighting looked just stunning, and I spent a happy fifteen minutes photographing the sword, trying many different compositions, of which this was my favoutite.
A fitting tribute and reminder of the mysteries that abound in this wonderful part of the world.
