The story behind this image

For our summer holiday this year, Liz and I stayed on the shores of Lough Derg, in Ireland's County Clare.

The last time I stayed here we had great weather for photography, with snow, rain, hail, sunshine and rainbows all occuring within 30 minutes of each other.

This time, however, the weather wasn't so great, with flat grey skies and a persistent drizzle that made photographing the grand scenery around us in any meaningful way a pretty pointless exersize.

However, while flat light might not be great for photographing the grand scene it's perfect for photographing smaller areas, not including any sky of course.

This group of lily pads caught my eye while walking along a dock by the side of the lough, with the colour really standing out in the dull light.

A polarising filter and a bit of PhotoShop magic boosted the colours even further for an impressionistic feel.
