Alwen Reservoir in North Wales is a gem of a place to visit.
Not as busy as nearby Brenig, nor as developed, there's a lovely seven mile hike that goes right around the lake.
My wife Liz and I walked this route last summer, stopping often to take photos of the lake, but also the little details that make a walk in the countryside such a voyage of discovery.
Frond lichens thrive in the clean welsh air, and there were plenty of examples such as this clinging to the trees along the path.
The low contrast light under the trees was ideal for capturing the delicacy of the lichen, and a wide open aperture threw the background details out of focus, allowing the fronds to take centre stage.
