The surreal volcanic landscape of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is certainly unique, and apart from the built up areas along the south coast the whole island seems to be one vast field of lava.
So my wife Liz and I were suprised to learn that Lanzarote is actually a major wine producer, with production centred around the region of La Geria in the central zone of the island.
During our week long winter break on Lanzarote in February 2018 we drove through La Geria a few times en-route to visit the coast or the volcanoes, and we were amazed to see how much effort goes into protecting the vines against the prevailing winds.
This panoramic view shows the typical landscape of the La Geria region, with a lonely Bodega set in a huge lava field backed by dormant volcanoes.
It was a great day to stop and take some photographs, with intermittent clouds blowing across the sky, casting patches of sunlight and shadow on the dramatic landscape below.
We never did get to try the wine though - too much driving to do!
