During our week long winter break on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands my wife Liz and I made every effort to explore as many out of the way places as possible.
Checking our map we spotted the small village of El Golfo, right at the end of a road leading northwards up the west coast before coming to an abrupt end at the border of the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya.
I love driving roads that end in the middle of nowhere, just to see what's there, and this is the view looking back towards El Golfo taken from the absolute end of the road.
The combination of blasted volcanic lava fields, dormant volcanic cones, the white buildings of El Golfo and the pounding Atlantic breakers provided a surreal juxtaposition, highlighting for me the fragility of our existence in the face of these incredible and magnificent natural forces.
Well worth a drive to experience this natural majesty.
