During our week long winter break on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands my wife Liz and I made every effort to explore as many out of the way places as possible.
One of the more dramatic places we stopped at was the Salinas de Janubio salt pans, on the western coast of Lanzarote just to the south of the small town of El Golfo.
Surrounded by the otherwordly volcanic landscape, seemingly bare of life, the man made evaporation basins took on a distinctly alien appearance.
The light during our visit was just as dramatic as the landscape, with broken cloud streaming by in the stiff breeze casting dancing patches of sunlight and shadow on the lava fields below.
Well worth an hour's worth of exploration and photography and I'm certainly glad we chose this road to drive along.
