The story behind this image

Park up at the Pen-y-Pass car park, on the road from Capel Curig to Caernarfon in Snowdonia, North Wales, start walking on the Miner's Track as it wends its way up the side of Snowdon and after half an hour or so you'll arrive at the small lake called Llyn Teyrn.

This lake has the nickname of 'mirror lake', and on a calm day the Snowdon Horseshoe ridge reflects rather nicely from its surface.

However, if you're an early riser like me you can be up and past Llyn Teyrn before sunrise. Then you can look back towards the east and watch as the sky gets brighter and brighter with the approach of the sun. The brightening sky reflects on the surface of the lake, causing it to glow against the blackness of the surrounding peaks like a jewel on a velvet cloth.

Some wispy morning clouds catching the first of the sun's rays, and a stray planet, complete the wonder of the scene. Well worth rising at 2.15am to experience.
