This is a very dramatic view of Llyn Mymbry in Snowdonia, North Wales, taken in mid-winter as I was on my way back down from climbing Moel Siabod.
The foreground is a field of dead heather and flood flattened grass that followed some very heavy rainfall in the area. (Not unusual!)
In the background, reflecting in the calm waters of the lake, is the snow crowned Snowdon horseshoe, sitting under a menacing sky.
I recall I just made it back to the car in time before the heavens opened yet again and gave the area another good soaking. No water shortage here!
When processing the file for goHOWiE.com I always had it in mind to convert the original colour image to monochrome, as the muddy colours of the dead grass seemed to me to detract from the atmosphere of the shot that I was trying to convey, while the black and white version brought out the drama and feel that I remember from being there.
It's always worth venturing out with a camera when the weather is active, even in the middle of winter.
